Cecilia DeRose was in the Education Department on Aug. 24 to teach students a bit about language and culture.
The students are part of the summer program.
“We’ve explained what the smudging is all about and then we’ve done a little medicine bag and that’s where some of the smudge goes.”
They also went over the uses of the medicine bag.
The group was still planning to go gather pitch one of the days to make a pitch salves, she said.
“I brought little samples so the kids could [see],” she says. “Then we’re learning just [a few] little words at a time in Shuswap.”
They thank all the participants who ranged in age from five to 18.
The students said they were really enjoying what they were learning.
