Taxation

Xatśūll is able to collect the taxation dollars from the utilities located on Deep Creek Reserve IR#2 and Soda Creek Band IR#2 through section 83 of the Indian Act.

Xatśūll currently holds 8 taxation portfolios.  The majority of the taxation dollars come from the pipelines that run through Deep Creek Reserve IR. 2.  We also collect taxation dollars from the telephone company.

Some of the lease agreements that Xatśūll (Soda Creek Band) has are with Pioneer Log Homes and the Nenqayni Treatment Center.  Xatśūll also leases the billboards that are located on Deep Creek Reserve.

The majority of the taxation dollars are spent on Community Services, such as sending the Elders to Elders Gatherings each year.

Community Economic Development

Xatśūll currently operates two social enterprises, Xatśūll Heritage Village and Whispering Willows Campsite.    Xatśūll Heritage Village is a site that brings ancient traditions to life, and brings both elders and youth to revive the Shuswap culture of the Xatśūll community, and share it with the world.  Whispering Willows Campsite is a campsite that caters to campers and RV'ers alike.  Both sites are available for rental.  A community garden was established because of the interest to address the shortage of fresh produce in the community. 

 

Xatśūll has a working business relationship with Likely, and therefore the agreement between Soda Creek Band and Likely is termed as Xatśūll Likely Community Forest.  The Xatśūll Likely Community Forest is a joint venture between Soda Creek Band and Likely

Whereas it is the intention of the Parties, the Likely Community Forest Society and The Soda Creek Indian Band, to form a joint venture business, the Likely-Xatśūll Community Forest Limited;

It is therefore agreed by the Parties as follows:

The Likely – Xatśūll Community Forest be a model, multi-use forest. This forest will provide a focal point which generates support and community pride. Through a positive collaborative effort, our communities will provide opportunities for economic ingenuity and innovation while ensuring environmental quality.

The five year pilot be guided by the following principles:
Cooperative management within and between Xatśūll and Likely communities based on open:

• Communication
• Every effort be made to maximize the AAC and maximize revenue through log sales targeting forest health/salvage opportunities
• Promote high standards to ensure protection of environmental values particularly water, wildlife, fish and biodiversity
• Emphasis on creating local employment through contracting, subcontracting and development of new businesses
• Explore opportunities for joint investment of profit share in projects that benefit both communities and community projects
• Set measurable goals to work towards a long-term tenure.
